My name is AnMa
From Delhi.
Grew up, grad, post grad, PhD from Delhi.

Been in Blore for nine years.

I came to APU six years ago.

In Blore I've also taught at Christ, taught in the Middle East

Child Development and Learning - Part 1 and 2

One of the five core courses.

What is this course about?

Child : We are going to talk about their development

Development: Their Development

Learning: Their Learning

While we keep the child at the centre ..

Why should we learn about children?

So that we design better education system.

Education of children in the middle and elementary school

Therefore this subject is important.

What is there to know about their development? Social factors. What are social factors? Social factors may influence development, but what is development.

Stages of development.

Children are subjects/objects that grow.

We are all adults. We belong to the stage of development that is called adulthood. Young, middle, old, cery old adulthood.

The stages of development for children. What aspects of development? Physical, cognitive, emotional, moral, social....

Why should we study all this?

Ro: All of this contributes to building better adults.

Am: We don't teach moral science to children.

Different domains of development.

One cannot distinguish between different domains of development.

Domains of development.

Pattern of growth of children, something that's unique to children.

Learning: How do children really learn? ( One of the toughest questions )


Deconstructing the child. Who is this child? Where is that model of the child? Do we have a typical model of the child?

Are all children the same?

What impacts their development and learning?

The course in located in the discipline of psychology. Child Development belongs to the larger umbrella of developmental psychology.

It borrows from various disciplines. There are dsciplines tath contribute to development.

How do we study children? What are the tools that we need to analyze the children? We will understand the tools of studying children.

We talk again about different domains of development.

Fairly strong component of practicuum.

Assigned to a particular school

CDL has huge practicuum component.

Bring back all the field work experiences in the class.

We will have debrief sessions.

For the course the readings will be in the Moodle.

Compendium is a collection of reading, compilation of all the essential readings.

From time to time, readings will be given to the students.

Library. Use the library!

Depend not on the instructor for the readings.

Expectations.

Its best that you read and come.

Submit the assignments before the due date and time.

Movies, documentaries, podcasts etc.

5 Submissions.

Come to class, participating in class discussions. Its 20% of your grades.

By participation,  it means , be engaged.

Regularity, submit assignments on time.

Try and be democractic.

Any concern, please voice it out. Feel free to say it. I would like that the class is as participatory as possible.

It may get boring and taxing. We will try and make the classes interesting and engaging.

Just try and be friends. Sometimes I call the shot.

If you feel you are not able to follow, please speak up.
AM : I can understand English and Hindi.

If you feel you need to speak in your language, speak it. Try to speak in English. It should stop you from speaking your mind.

The language of reading and writing here in English.

Some core readings are getting translated in Hindi and Kannada.

Presentations need to be done in English.

Assessements

Four Submissions:

Group Presentations: Form a group, make a presentation, rating rubric, grades for content, individual input; One of the submissions.

Class Test: At the end of the semester, on the last unit.

The Practicum portfolio: A series of submissions, in the blue journal which you will be maintaining. After one or two visits, journals will be checked. Along with that , you will be doing a small independent research.

This course is practicum heavy.

Fix an assignment

For all core courses, we have CASS sessions. Academic support for students, two weeks from now.

Atleast one hour of course

Outside of the course, are workshops, usually on Wednesdays, when there's no school.


Using laptops in class:

Laptop can be used if you're taking notes!

If you're taking notes and you're involved and engrossed its okay!

Please inform the prof if you're not coming to the class.

You may have tea/coffee, just dont have elaborate meals.

Workshops: Observing children, interviewing children,

On the 26th ( tentatively ) you will have the screening of a film. Discussion on the film, The Wild Boy of Avaron.

You will watch it sectionwise.

I will missing a couple of your classes. Next Thu, Fri, Mon, you will not have the CDL classes. You will have to compensate for that somehow.

We could have  a workshop on something like that. We will take up one whole class.
